Trail of blood in Free State farmer's home

2012-09-10 09:06

Bloemfontein - The small town of Trompsburg in the Free State has been shocked by the brutal murders of a farmer and his wife.

Well-known and popular members of the community, Johan Fourie, 71, and his wife Cecile 72, were shot dead on their farm on Sunday, reported Volksblad.

The couple were last seen when they had lunch at their son’s house in town.

Their bodies were found in the bedroom shortly before 20:00. Both had been shot. The gun safe had been broken open.

An unnamed source said there was a trail of blood in the house, leading from the living room to the bedroom.

A police spokesperson said the attackers appeared to have been waiting for the couple after gaining entry through a bathroom window.

“They were very friendly people who wouldn’t have harmed a fly. The whole town is shocked,” said a Trompsburg resident.

Police were investigating.

This is such a tragic loss of life! Farmers are so important for our economy and such senseless killings are cruel! My heart goes out to the family!

      junebugg.kinte - 2012-09-10 09:53

SMH...Crime in this country though...if they wanted to rob their house, they should have taken what they wanted and left them alone..They are senior citizens for goodness sake, they cant even fight back yerrrr

      philip.hoffmann.79 - 2012-09-10 10:01

It says: They have been shot. The news from my relatives in Trompsburg is that they have been killed with a spade or something similar.

      adrian.bean - 2012-09-10 10:03

"This is tragic" and "it is sad" does not help anymore. We can be bitter about it but unless the citizens of South Africa don't DO something about these farm murders it will continue! The ANC don't see farm murders as such a big problem and focus on self enrichment rather crime! Emigarate or walk with guns or do what ever is neccesary to stop these brutal, gruesome and senseless murders!

Zuma, Malema!!!! WHAT do u say about this!!!!!??? SHOCKING!!!

      robert.e.ball.9 - 2012-09-10 10:34

I am not commenting on this tragic story directly however I have question that is relevant. Why is it illegal to state the race of the attackers if the race of the attackers is known? In addition, why are the suspects labelled "attackers?' Surely the suspects should be refereed to as "killers". There was another tragic story recently where 2 idiotic men senselessly beat a Muslim man to death for no valid reason. When that story broke, why did all news reports specifically labelled the attackers as 2 White Afrikaans men?

      joe.mac.31521301 - 2012-09-10 10:37

This is genocide, nothing else. Wake up SA! http://www.genocidewatch.org/southafrica.html

      robert.e.ball.9 - 2012-09-10 10:38

I know the police are still investigating the case, and the race of the "attackers" (killers) may still need to be determined, however I submit to you, that when the race of the "attackers" (killers) is determined, news reports will still omit that information.

      heibrin.venter - 2012-09-10 10:50

@Robert: if all the attacks purported by blacks were reported as such there would be a massive, massive upheaval, as the general SA public, and more importantly (in the eyes of the ANC government) the international community would wake up to the genocide being committed in SA. NO other reason. If whites commits a crime (as in your example), it's stated as such, since it helps the 'whites are evil' cause. NO other reason. If anyone wishes to disagree, and have another theory, please post it, I'm keen to know if anyone else have thought about it??

      mihaip007 - 2012-09-10 10:53

I am sorry - but I don;t understand the kind of response the farming community has - IS there any sort of response? They have been killing farmers, and all I hear - pres. do this, do that, the police should do this or that! If I were a farmer I would be CONSERNED and I would prioritise some sort of response to all of this! SOMETHING must be done even if there has to be some sort of a violent RESPONSE! It is OBVIOUS that this is political agenda, kill the farmers to get the land. etc etc! It is ALSO obvious that NO ONE FROM THE GOV. will EVER attend to this..! so what now farmers? are you going to quietly be killed one by one? In zim at least they told you - get out or be killed! Here they say - don't worry it is all going to be okay, and then they kill you! And don;t come to me with - it is all crime and all races are blah blah - just shut up because it is all about KILLING FARMERS! WHY ELSE did they wait for them to come back????? hmmmm

      zambezi.river - 2012-09-10 10:53

What as South Africans r we going to do about this? Are we going to take this one bullet at a time. Not a nice way for old folks to die! Wake up SA! There is something very sinister happening here!

      mihaip007 - 2012-09-10 11:05

okay - just a thought! I want to complain to an international body like the court at Hague about all of this! But if I send them a letter and have it signed by many people - nothing will be done as such - what about having many letters sent to the Hague concurrently by many people - surely that would flow like a flood of requests to have this investigated! What are your opinions on this thought?

      ann.murray.9279 - 2012-09-10 11:47

Who, in their right minds gives a thumbs down to this type of story? Sick puppies whoever you are!!!! Condolences to the loved ones and RIP those unfortunate victims :(

Fellow readers, please excuse me. My intention of my question was not for clarity at all. I simply wanted to hold the Main Stream Media in derision.

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-09-10 13:24

Mihaip007. The court in The Haque concernes themselves with war crimes and crime against humanity. You have a better chance with the European Union where right wing politicians have already asked that SAA no longer have landing rights because of their policy not to train white pilots.

      gillian.sanderson - 2012-09-10 13:38

      JAbu.R15 - 2012-09-10 10:02

Thanks you Phillip now can you tell that idiot who posted that the people might have done something to deserve to die what you just wrote here. Why do people think that a person must be killed nje, even even they are bad; even the cruel terblanche didnt deserve to die like that. Few people understand what death does to a persona nd to the family left behind and the rest who dont are spreading the hate.

      philip.hoffmann.79 - 2012-09-10 10:07

Jabu, yes these were good people, but I understand that some people are trying to make the point that it is pure crime. Farm murders are brutal and in most cases people are tortured. Also it is very seldom that the farmers own workers are involved. The point is there are lots of questions that remain unanswered surrounding farm murders.

      gillian.sanderson - 2012-09-10 13:44

@philip - very sad indeed. My condolences to all involved/concerned. Farmers are generally of the older age bracket, this surely plays a role in these cowardly curs live - running around torturing and killing the vulnerable, elderly, hard working, rate paying, god fearing, citizens. Makes me so sick . . . aaarrrggghhh!!!

      chris.hadfield2 - 2012-09-11 16:08

@Phillip.Hoffman: I read on another site that they weren't shot they were hacked or bludgeoned to death? Also, the suspects apparentley sat in their lounge drinking while waiting for the couple to return home - this was a violent hate crime perpetrated by goverment sponsered terrorists. This is genocide.

      siphiwo.maurice - 2012-09-10 10:09

Smallies, please do not turn this tragic loss into politics. The motive for the killing and or who killed this couple, is not yet known. As people, it is not helping when one just jumps into a conclusion and bring race into this whole issue of a tragic loss. let us be a responsible and cool-minded citizens. We all go through this irrespective of colour. I hope, Smallie, you understand now.

      shaylene.stenger - 2012-09-10 10:52

So what has been the motive for the other 3000 farmers that have been murdered, hey Siphiwo? This couple who was murdered will just join the stats. Nothing justifies murder!!!!!!!!

      maylani.bezuidenhout - 2012-09-10 11:59

I think all law abiding South Africans would like to see an end to the farm murders as they are destroying the unity of our nation. Please, let's see a commission of enquiry and some effective changes. But it won't happen because neither the politicians or the majority voting public seem to care. Maybe when they are all forced to grow their own food because imported food prices are so high they will lament the loss of these men and women who work hard to provide for us.

      lee.ferreira - 2012-09-10 14:46

Smallies soos met so baie ander gevalle, sal dit maar weer eens stil stil wegraak...

      hendrik.schutte.3152 - 2012-09-11 12:33

Commisions of enquiry very quickly mentioned when an ANC politician (c adre/comrade) in KZN is murdered. That is not acceptable at all, but if it is elerly white farmers, then it is fine and no enquiry needed, it is just crime. It makes my blood boil such double standards from what is "supposedly" the leaders of the COUNTRY, they must realise they are not just the leaders of a select portion of the population.

  • CopperWoody - 2012-09-10 09:17

they are killing us... one by one....

      charlesdumbwin.dumbwin - 2012-09-10 09:34

Jabu, if you believe that then you're completely insane. We know who the killers of farmers are in South Africa. Stop lying to yourself. It's sad, but true.

      deboer.boer.9 - 2012-09-10 09:56

Jabu, they are the savage blacks of our land. Nine out of every ten murders in this country is commited by blacks, they are savages, not all blacks. Only the blacks that think its the whites fault that they dont have jobs, or education or food or houses or Tvs or BMWs!

      charlesdumbwin.dumbwin - 2012-09-10 09:57

Jabu, the reason why blacks are not killed in the townships by whites, is because whites don't form teenage gangs and break into black homes and murder black families, with old black people and young babies. Whites don't do this to blacks in South Africa.

      rick.kabose - 2012-09-10 09:57

Jabu - is it whites killing blacks in the townships?

      FeebleGastro - 2012-09-10 10:25

Hanna Lochner, so you have one example. A white going into the township to murder blacks is a HUGE exception. Whites are getting murdered by blacks on farms on a daily basis. WTF is your point?

      Heibrin - 2012-09-10 11:35

@HannaLochner: the point is this: percentage wise more whites are being killed by blacks than blacks being killed by whites. And we're not talking a few percentage points here, we're talking tens of percentage points. One attack = people killing people. Two attacks, maybe. Three and more, throwing in the torture, the children murdered, those already beaten murdered and what do you have? GENOCIDE. THAT is the point.

      Hanna - 2012-09-10 18:56

People are getting killed, it should not matter if thy are black or white or who did it...the POINT is people are getting killed and to turn these really unfortunate happenings into yet ANOTHER opportunity for racial back and forths just makes me sick. If someone is murdered that in itself is sad, to see grown ups going racial about it is "sad".

      heibrin.venter - 2012-09-11 07:13

@Hannah: please see my reply to shantel.vivekanandan below. See the bigger picture, don't be an ostrich.

      leon.groenewald.33 - 2012-09-11 09:39

@ Hannah: It is people like you, PC, media programmed, sorry to be white, ANC apologists who'd want to see the whole world's skin color turn coffee brown that that turn my stomach. I have more respect for a black person who openly says he hate me for being white. At least he has pride in his race!

      Hanna - 2012-09-11 13:11

@ Leon Groenewald, And thus our country stands still. You dont know me so dont get into my character, whats good for the goose is good for the gander and if you can say what you want like a self righteous ass like the world owes you something then i am allowed to disagree with it. Seeing that we are calling each other animals around here that one seemed to fit! And i have no problem debating my distaste for the manner of this conversation to your face, i dont need to hide behind my PC, and i am not apologetic to the ANC, i was way to young when that was going down, obviously you were'nt but the thing is MY generation now have to sit with the proud mess of people like you. I was actually visiting the Free State this weekend. Coming from Gauteng the one thing I clearly noticed as driving past farms and in the towns was the total disregard for security. It pisses me off to put it mildly that farmers and innocents are killed daily. My grandparents were farmers for years. Visiting my family down in the Free State I realized one thing, we have start looking at security down there. Every farmer and individual needs to get alarm systems, burglar bars and more. We live in a corrupt country with bigots running around and the only way to beat them is to be smarter and more crafty and if he trespasses, shoot don't ask. The fact is we can no longer say it will not happen to me with have to be vigilant, fight back and use every measure possible to defend ourselves. These animals will not stop until we stop them.

      stefan.vanderspuy - 2012-09-10 10:47

I agree that it is absolutely essential for a person/family to ensure that the house or whatever they live in is scured to the maximum. The guy who breaks into my house gets a lead bullet; my security systems will ensure that I am awake and ready by the time he actually gets into the house.

  • gembleton1 - 2012-09-10 09:33

I wonder if the farmers (excuse the pun) bit the bullet for one season and did not plant or harvest anything, and laid off their workers in protest, would this stealing and corrupt ANC government finely stand up and take notice of the farmers, in my mind this is the only way forward, boycott everything, then the government will do something about it And for those that say this is unfair on the workers, so is killing our food security.

      marius.j.rensburg.3 - 2012-09-10 10:45

Racism is far from over in south africa. I see it here mostly, it's always races fighting against each other. black and whites!!! it will never end, people die and those who remains behind instead of looking for a solution they play hate games and insult each other. if the ANC is wronging you white people,it is not the blacks, ANC is not black as much as DA aint white! stop politicising crime

No man, do not turn this into a race issue! On a daily basis black, coloured and Indian people die as a result of crime in SA! The crime situation in this country is horrible, for everyone! How many people fell victim to crime in Mitchell's Plane, Diepsloot, UMlazi and Mdantsani just this past weekend alone??? Let us ALL unite against crime and stop this racial finger pointing. You know the racial tension is terrible in this country when, as a black person, you get such a huge relief to learn that the perpetrator of a crime is not black. It shouldn't be that way, but sadly it has become a reality for many black people, we are constantly having to defend our race. Some issues are not racially motivated, wait for the facts. It's a sad, barbiric and inhuman deed to shoot a helpless 70 year old couple! I hope they catch the animals that did this punish them harshly, take them to Khayelitsha and let them face the community!

      koos.vandermerwe.75 - 2012-09-10 10:11

Yip and your goverment is doing nothing to help the stats of crime!!!!!!! They don't care cause they are surrounded by 6 body guards and 12m high walls!!!!!!! Your goverment doesn't care about uniting the race groups, inactual fact they are creating more division!!!!!!!!!!!

      Heibrin - 2012-09-10 11:46

@beki: if this wasn't about race, then why kill? They already had the safe open, why not simply leave with what they stole? If not about race, why then are the victims of farm attacks invariably tortured, raped, maimed and killed? Why is the percentage of whites killed by blacks vs whites killed by any other group so high (I know there are far more blacks than any other race in SA, which is why we're talking percentages)??

  • sbacosta - 2012-09-10 09:55

CAN YOU ONLY MESS WITH OLD PEOPLE OR BABYS? STOP PLAAS MOORDE. SAVAGES.

"Some issues are not racially motivated, wait for the facts. It's a sad, barbiric and inhuman deed to shoot a helpless 70 year old couple! I hope they catch the animals that did this punish them harshly, take them to Khayelitsha and let them face the community! " Thank you Beki Khumalo we tend to forget that murders do also occur amongst other races, and not only the whites but to us it feels that we are targeted, and especially the people who provide food to our Country and some neighboring countries. Why attack helpless people who just want to live their last days to the fullest?? I hope they catch these cowards!!!!!! We need to start with a peoples court as they do in the townships...........but will it help?

      beki.khumalo - 2012-09-10 10:09

I think I would help, it's a dangerous practise because it can be abused by some, and obviously illegal. But in communities where vigilantism exists crime stats drop, clearly it does deter criminals to an extent. It'll also will act as a wake up call to the authorities that citizens have had enough! Organise and catch the thugs, teach them a lesson...

  • Helene - 2012-09-10 10:03

why are elderly farmers not employing security guards or bodyguards to look after them? don't they know that farmers are being targeted?

      justin.pretorius - 2012-09-11 09:17

They can't afford the costs. We spend billions on security every year because the regime does nothing. SA is lost

  • siphiwo.maurice - 2012-09-10 10:03

May their souls rest in peace and their families, find closure. This is not acceptable in our normal times. The senior citizens, need our protection, not to kill them. May the cops, find the killers and bring them to book.

  • miche.crowster - 2012-09-10 10:04

if you think its ok to kill another human being out of angry you are disgusting and inhuman retards. Everybody has the right to live, NOBODY has the right to take a life no matter what the case is so stop making dumb accusations we all know what happened to those two old people because we know been happening to all farmers .

  • khathu.rasi - 2012-09-10 10:05

Farmers are dying big tym tjo, m tired of these killings, everyday is a farm attack, is there no end to this? GOD HEAL THIS COUNTRY, WE ARE SICK

  • pierre.walt - 2012-09-10 10:06

Another ANC/Julius kill the boer incident. They should be charged.

  • max.maxwell - 2012-09-10 10:07

This was not robbery! This was a planned murder with political motives! The murder of white farmers is aimed at creating an atmosphere of fear in the white population, so as to encourage emigration! I've seen it before, when more white farmers died in the years immediately after Independence in Zim than died in 15 years of conflict!

  • John Peter Steyn - 2012-09-10 10:09

No wonder there are less people farming these days.

  • comrade.shefu - 2012-09-10 10:16

Mr Malema must say something about this murder. Why zip your mouth sir whilst comrades are being murdered in this rainbow nation .

  • kuvha.tshilamatanda - 2012-09-10 10:22

how about start to forget about courts and start chopping thugs and murderers ourself,i mean we can do it,if we catch one we chop them to pieces in the public while everyone sees,i think it could work!

  • Harold Chisimba - 2012-09-10 10:25

No wonder, There will be critical food shortage in RSA or too astronomical to buy,in five years time due to these malicious and rascial killings of farmers.

  • riaan.coetzee1 - 2012-09-10 10:27

Yet another tragic loss of life. Voice alert by itself probably won't save you. What you need is a full on mindset change. You need to increase your awareness by 100%. Your family too. You need to ensure you have sufficient early warning systems in place to be able to be woken up before they get inside. You should not simply enter your home - you should walk around, ensure all is ok before entering. You should go for further training - criminals are professional and VERy willing to kill. If you are mentally and physically unprepared you are already at a disadvantage. And you need a safety plan for you and your family - and you need to practise it regular. Also - your weapon(s) of choice need to be practised with VERY regular. And it must be directly accesible - in the safe helps you nothing. We need to realise that we are facing a terrible criminal onslaugh, and we need to adapt accordingly. You cannot hope to beat them by sticking your head in the sand and pretending it won't happen to you.

  • michael.hein.7374 - 2012-09-10 10:31

Somebody needs to create a Vigilante group, if the government arent gonna protect the whites, then somebody should!!! no remorse!!!! enough is enough!!!! at least we have brain on our side!!!

  • nico.eksteen.7 - 2012-09-10 10:34

What is the ratio of killing at present? One bullet, one farmer, one day? This thing is completely out of control and the ruling party is condoning it by watering it down to plain criminality. It's genocide. Needs to be taken to the world court in The Hague

  • brendaanne.anderson - 2012-09-10 10:34

@ Charles Dumbwin, Jouma setannie, Sean Carbutt and deboer.boer - perhaps you should take a closer look at JAbu.R15 first post at 10.02. He was sympathising with Philip Hoffmann 79, chastising somebody for saying that perhaps these old people deserved to die and said that even Eugene Terblanche did not deserve to die the way he did. This man is on your side. Perhaps an apology is in order here? Just saying !!!
