Train derailed in Mpumalanga

Johannesburg - The Railway Safety Regulator said on Thursday that a train carrying dolomite derailed in Sprucewell near Balfour in Mpumalanga, causing the closure of the railway line.

The RSR said in a statement: "A total of 15 carriages derailed, two mast poles were damaged and 1 400 sleepers were damaged. The overhead line has also been affected.

"About 1km of line has also been damaged and the line will probably be closed for a couple of days."

The train was travelling from Lime Acres to Newcastle in KwaZulu-Natal when the accident happened early on Thursday morning.

The RSR said that Transnet Freight Rail was investigating and would present a complete report."

Trains running through Sprucewell will be re-routed to Kroonstad.
