Tonga - A trainee sangoma, accused of raping three women, appeared in the Tonga Regional Court in Mpumalanga on Tuesday.

Kenneth Sthembiso Metiso told the court he had settled the debt he had with his private lawyer and now wanted to apply for legal aid.

The 26-year-old from Mdladla village near Malelane had struggled to pay for private representation.

"Your Worship, I am unemployed now and I cannot afford to pay an attorney so please appoint me a free lawyer," he said.

Magistrate Edgar Moletsane agreed and postponed the case to June 23.

Metiso is out on R1 000 bail and has pleaded not guilty to three counts of rape and one of skipping bail.

During his previous court appearance, Metiso denied skipping bail and explained he was being treated at a sangoma's practice after falling ill.
