Trains back on schedule - Prasa

2012-03-05 20:37
Johannesburg - All Metrorail trains were running on schedule on Monday as staff returned to work, the Passenger Rail Agency of SA (Prasa) said.

"Everything is back to normal. The schedules are back to normal. This morning [Monday] all the staff reported for duty," spokesperson Lawrence Venkile said.

Last Monday, SA Transport and Allied Workers' Union (Satawu) members went on strike demanding the dismissal of Prasa CEO Lucky Montana.

About 3 000 workers in Tshwane and Johannesburg were on strike, with workers in the Eastern and Western Cape.

On Friday, the Johannesburg Labour Court ruled that the strike was unprotected.

A man was arrested on Monday in connection with fires on train carriages in and around Johannesburg.

This brought to six the number of arrests in connection with vandalism and the torching of trains, Venkile said.

Five men were arrested on Thursday, after six trains were burned in New Canada, Soweto, and at the Braamfontein and Elandsfontein yards on Wednesday night.

Another three train carriages were torched at the Orlando East railway station in Soweto on Thursday night.

The damaged was estimated at about R70m, Venkile said.

Metrorail and Prasa have blamed striking workers for starting the fires. Satawu has denied this, saying "criminals" were responsible.
