Cape Town - Trains carrying mourners to the Nelson Mandela memorial service at FNB stadium in Johannesburg are experiencing delays due to high passenger volumes.

Metrorail spokesperson Lillian Mofokeng told News24 on Tuesday morning that there are delays of about 30 minutes, as passengers are taking longer than expected to alight from trains.

"This is mainly as a result of the high volumes we are experiencing, and we are being extra careful due to safety concerns – it is raining, people are wet, and the platforms are slippery.

"We have deployed extra platform marshals to handle the high volume of passengers."

Mofokeng said trains are moving between the CBD and Nasrec station, and Metrorail is committed to getting mourners safely to the stadium.

Earlier, EWN tweeted that the delay was due to the rain and crowding on platforms at Nasrec station.

Some people tweeted that they were stuck on the train about 1km from the stadium, and had jumped out to walk the rest of the way.

Mofokeng denied initial reports that the delays were as a result of a power cut. She was also unable to say whether the start of the memorial service would be delayed.
