Johannesburg - Transport Minister Dipuo Peters and the RTMC plan to investigate the cause of the collision that killed seven people on the N2-Nolangeni near Kokstad on Thursday.

"A high-level investigation team, has been instituted to unearth the causal factors of this crash," the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) said in a statement.

"The team is not limited to determining the cause of the crash but also includes coming up with proposed interventions to ensure the prevention of a recurrence."

Earlier on Thursday, the KwaZulu-Natal transport department said a truck collided with a bakkie when it tried to avoid an oncoming vehicle.

At least two people were seriously injured and three others sustained minor injuries. They were taken to a nearby hospital.

Those who died were occupants of the bakkie.

Transport MEC Willies Mchunu urged drivers to be vigilant on the road.

"I am deeply saddened by the loss of lives in such a gruesome manner. I reiterate our call for all road users to remain vigilant and patient as well as adhere to road traffic rules."

With the Easter season approaching, more officials would be present on the roads.

"I would like to send my deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and wish those in hospital a speedy recovery," Mchunu said.
