Durban - Around 50 schoolchildren escaped unharmed when their bus almost plunged down an embankment in Tongaat in KwaZulu-Natal on Thursday, said paramedics.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said the bus had been parked on an incline along the R614 when it inexplicably rolled down a hill.

"The bus crashed into barriers and a tree. The tree then prevented it from falling down a fifty metre embankment," said Botha.

Two people were treated for minor injuries at the scene before being transported to a hospital in the area.

Investigations into the incident were under way.
