Johannesburg - The murder trial of a suspected gang leader was postponed in the Mankweng Magistrate's Court on Friday, Limpopo police said.

David Mabeba would remain in custody and be back in court on July 6, spokesperson Constable Moses Molepo said.

Mabeba is accused of murdering four men on a mountain near Nobody village, near Polokwane.

According to the initial charge sheet he faced another four charges of rape, but this has been amended.

Molepo said he now also faced a charge of rape, one of hijacking, one of malicious damage to property, three of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, three of robbery, and one of attempted murder.

His modus operandi was to target couples visiting the mountain. He allegedly assaulted and killed the men before raping the woman, Molepo said.

It was unclear why three of the rape charges were dropped.
