Cape Town - Three men arrested in connection with an attempted jewellery store heist in Caledon will appear in the local magistrate’s court once charged, Western Cape police said on Wednesday.

The trio were nabbed less than half an hour after the business was hit on Tuesday, spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk confirmed.

"It was reported that an unidentified armed male entered the jewellery shop at about 10:10 and threatened the two shop assistants," he said.

"Another suspect entered and he had bags and cable ties. The alarm was activated and the suspects fled the scene."

After the police were notified of the incident, the information was disseminated to the surrounding police stations.

Grabouw police officers spotted the maroon Jeep that the suspects were driving on the N2 and pulled the vehicle over.

"Three suspects fitting the description as provided, aged between 26 and 31, were found inside the vehicle," Van Wyk said.

"They were armed with two 9mm pistols and one .38 revolver [with the serial numbers filed off]. Sixteen 9mm rounds and six .38 special rounds of ammunition were confiscated."

The men would appear in court for possession of prohibited firearms and ammunition once charged, he added.
