Johannesburg - Four men aged between 25 and 30 were arrested by an off-duty police officer for allegedly trying to steal a vehicle in Roodepoort, West Rand police said on Wednesday.
Superintendent Milica Bezuidenhout said inspector Corrie Botha was on his way to gym at 05:30 when he saw two cars parked along the road with four men standing between them.
He became suspicious and called for back-up.
The men were allegedly towing one of the cars when the rope snapped. The police blocked the front vehicle and arrested three men.
The driver of the towed car, which was found to have been stolen earlier on Wednesday morning, was also arrested.
Bezuidenhout said the men would appear in Roodepoort magistrate's court.
