Johannesburg - A man who raped and robbed three women in KwaZulu-Natal has been sentenced to 75 years in jail, police said on Wednesday.
Captain Thulani Zwane said Xolani Paris Thwala, 31, appeared in the Dukuza High Court in Bergville on Tuesday.
"He was sentenced to 15 years in jail for each rape and 10 years for each robbery," said Zwane.
In three separate incidents between September 2010 and March 2011, Thwala promised three women that he would get employment for them at a newly opened Mpathi Mountain hotel, in Dundee.
He then arranged to take them to the hotel. On their way to the hotel, he turned against them, forcing them into the bushes where he raped and robbed them of their cellphones and cash at knifepoint.
The victims opened cases at Dundee police station and the Dundee Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit started their investigation which led to Thwala's arrest in March 2011.
The KZN provincial commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended the police for their excellent investigation that led to the conviction and sentencing of the accused.
"This conviction will send a strong message to those criminals who target and rape women who cannot defend themselves," she was quoted as saying by Zwane.
