Truck accident kills two

2010-07-31 17:03
Johannesburg - Two men died when their truck slammed into a broken down truck outside Vereeniging, south of Johannesburg on Friday, paramedics said.

"A truck had broken down and the driver called a mechanic for help. The two were (inspecting) the truck when they noticed another truck coming straight for them," said ER24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson.

"According to eyewitnesses, the two just ran as fast as they could into the field next to the road," she said.

"A second truck slammed into the stationery truck as well as the mechanic's bakkie (ejecting) both male occupants out of the front windscreen".

Both men died at the scene. Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said it initially appeared that the men in the second truck were travelling on the R64 between Vereeniging and Villiers when they turned a corner and lost control.

The road surface was "severely" damaged by the incident and traffic had to be diverted.
