Pretoria - A steel fence around a church in the notorious Potgieter Street in Pretoria stopped a runaway truck from causing mayhem during peak hour traffic on Thursday.
The vehicle was on its way to Schoeman Street about 16:00 when it turned into Potgieter Street. The brakes apparently failed and the driver, Zolandi Xaba, 32, ploughed into the Reformed Church fence in order to avoid crashing into other vehicles.
Numerous runaway trucks have caused havoc in Potgieter Street in the past few years.
In the most recent incident, about three weeks ago, 14 people were killed when a runaway truck collided with a minibus taxi.
