Johannesburg - A truck driver died and three other people were seriously injured in an accident involving two trucks and a bakkie on the N3 highway in Bedfordview on Wednesday, Ekurhuleni metro police said.

Around 03:10, a white freight truck rammed into the back of a white and blue truck, which was carrying cooking oil from Pietermaritzburg, and both trucks veered off the road, Inspector Kobeli Mokheseng said.

An Opel Corsa bakkie was also involved in the resultant crash, Mokheseng said.

The driver of the white truck was declared dead on the scene, while the driver and two passengers of the bakkie were seriously injured and admitted to hospital.

The driver of the blue and white truck was not physically injured. The cause of the accident was not clear and would be investigated.
