Johannesburg - A suspected truck hijacker was arrested near Putfontein, on the East Rand, on Thursday morning, Ekurhuleni metro police said.

"Metro police officers closed in on the truck at 11:40 at the split of R21 southbound and R24 westbound and arrested the driver," Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago said in a statement.

The 51-year-old man driving it was charged with possession of a stolen truck. The truck's owner said his driver had been dumped in Putfontein just after 11:00.

Police were searching for the other people involved, believed to be driving in a white Nissan Sentra and a black BMW 3 series.

The man would appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate's Court soon.
