Truck lands in Port Alfred harbour

Port Elizabeth - A truck has landed in Port Alfred harbour after swerving to avoid a car which ran a stop street while being chased by the police, the National Sea Rescue Institute said on Monday.

"The driver jumped off the truck through the passenger window and managed to get himself out of the water safely," said NSRI Port Alfred station commander Keryn van der Walt.

He sustained minor injuries when the truck crashed through a fence and toppled into the water in the accident on Sunday.

Van der Walt said there were two large containers on the truck's trailer. Although they were marked with warnings that there could be hazardous materials inside, the containers were empty.

"The truck missed crashing into the bow of one of the larger boats by only a few metres," she said.

Two tow trucks winched the truck out of the water and it was taken to East London.

Van der Walt said the police were believed to have arrested the occupants of the vehicle involved in the chase.
