Truck ploughs into broken-down car

Johannesburg - Five people were killed and another is fighting for his life after an articulated truck rammed into a car on the N3 freeway in Leondale on Saturday, paramedics said.

The car in which the six people had been travelling, had broken down on the north-bound carriageway. The truck, heading in the same direction, couldn't stop in time and ploughed into the car, said Netcare 911 spokesperson Jeffrey Wicks.

The impact was such that the car and the truck came to a halt about 25m from where the accident happened.

Wicks said the critically injured man was trapped in the wreckage of the and paramedics and fire-fighters battled for over an hour to free him.

He was airlifted to the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital.

The bodies of the five killed also had to be cut free from the wreckage with jaws of life.
