Mbombela - Two people were killed when a truck crashed into a bus, apparently after its bonnet popped open, in Mpumalanga, on Wednesday morning, officials said.

"Information at our disposal suggests that the bonnet of the cash-in-transit truck blew open and blocked the windshield of the truck while it was in motion on the Kanyamazane road," community safety, security, and liaison department spokesperson Joseph Mabuza said, according to a Sapa correspondent.

The driver lost control and the truck veered into the path of an oncoming articulated Buscor bus going to Mbombela, knocking it off the road about 15km outside the city.

"Investigators on the scene found that only a wire must have been used to lock the bonnet that blew open. Given that these are preliminary findings, law enforcement officers will probe the matter further to find out if the truck was roadworthy," Mabuza said.

The injured were taken to the Rob Ferreira and Themba hospitals.

ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said paramedics and a government helicopter responded to the scene swiftly.

"Paramedics found two critically injured people in the bus, but sadly both of them succumbed to their injuries while paramedics were busy working on them.

"At this stage it appears that a majority of the patients sustained several fractures, lacerations, and other injuries."

The department's MEC, Vusi Shongwe, sent condolences to the families of the two people killed.
