Truck takes out 15 cars on N1 Rivonia

2012-05-09 18:16

Johannesburg - A truck overturned and crashed into at least 15 cars on the N1 highway between Rivonia and William Nicol, leaving a 300m-long accident scene, paramedics said on Wednesday.

The truck was heading in a southerly direction from the Buccleuch Interchange when the driver allegedly lost control of the truck.

The truck crashed into the vehicles and left in its wake an approximate 300m-long accident scene with pieces of wrecked vehicles strewn across the highway.

"Miraculously only two people have sustained moderate injuries, " ER24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson said.

"Paramedics from the entire area rushed to the scene and each occupant of every car was assessed to determine whether they had been injured."

The already strained afternoon traffic was brought to an almost complete standstill with only a partial lane of the five lane highway open to traffic.

Thank God no one died. There is a God.

Then by your same insane logic, if there was a god then there would not have been accident...

Yeah those people surviving had nothing to do with the DECADES of work done by automotive manufactures to ensure that the vehicles they were driving were as safe as possible. ABS, seatbealts, shatter proof windscreens, Airbags, Crumple zones, ESP and DSP had clearly nothing to do with their survival. Give credit where credit is due

But, but they said with the improved highways we will all get around quicker and safer...

Trucks must pay toll if they use highways in peak hour - R 10 000 a go.

Into my bank account please, Ali says so!

      Martin - 2012-05-09 20:45

More than one witness on ER24 said it was caused by a car cutting in front of the truck trying to get off the freeway without waiting in the queue......seems it wasn't the trucks fault... Patience people !

....and you can than multiply your expense account with between 1.3 and 1.4 to see how much you going to need when restricting trucks's movement. Please just believe me. I am on my way to bed and do not have time to explain the formula, used, to some-one who are capable of such a blind and uninformed statement, but it is supposed to be my forte.

GROOTROT THINK WHAT YOU ARE SAYING PLEASE. ALL OUR FOOD, PETROL, ETC. ARE BEING CARRIED IN THESE TRUCKS - IMAGINE HOW THE PRICE OF ALL THESE GOODS WILL RISE IF THEY DO CHARGE THEM THE R10000.00 ?

Small mercies. I saw the carnage. People were very lucky. Sick of these poorly laden, SLOW, HEAVY, SMOKY trucks. They should be confined to a single lane.
