Truck torched in Elandsfontein

2012-10-01 19:46
Johannesburg - A truck driver was ambushed and his vehicle set alight on Kraft road, in Elandsfontein, by a group of men on Monday morning, Ekurhuleni metro police said.

Inspector Kobeli Mokhoseng said the driver and two passengers escaped unharmed.

"The truck owners, from a well-known bakery, have opened a case of malicious damage to property," said Makhoseng.

The flow of traffic on Kraft road was affected for more than two hours.

Truck drivers aligned to the SA Transport and Allied Workers' Union (Satawu), the Professional Transport and Allied Workers' Union SA, the Transport and Allied Workers' Union of SA, and the Motor Transport Workers' Union have been on strike over pay for a week.

Makhoseng said law enforcers would continue to watch and patrol railway stations, bridges over freeways and industrial sites until the situation was under control.

On Friday, the Labour Court granted an interdict preventing any violence during the strike after trucks were set alight and stoned, and staff were assaulted.

Satawu spokespersonVincent Masoga said all the unions involved in the wage dispute with the Road Freight Employers' Association condemned the violence. He called for "iron discipline".

Unions want a 12% increase in pay and have rejected a lower offer tabled by employers.

Talks to resolve the strike continued on Monday.
