Trust my office, says Madonsela

2012-10-20 22:06

Johannesburg - Public Protector Thuli Madonsela concluded the national good governance week with a visit to Diepsloot, north of Johannesburg on Saturday.

She interacted with shoppers at the Diepsloot shopping centre on issues of ethical leadership and governance.

Madonsela urged communities to trust her office with their service delivery grievances and refrain from violent protests.

"You need to know what good governance and ethical governance are so as well as how these tie up with a responsive service delivery that will ensure that you lead a better life as promised in the constitution," she said.

At the end of her visit, several service delivery complaints were lodged.

Some members of the community complained that they were yet to get positive feedback on the applications they had made in the 1990s for RDP houses.

Others complained that the local healthcare clinic only operated eight hours a day.

The Public Protector undertook to look into the matters raised and would give priority to urgent items such as the water cuts.

if only all in government had this lady's work ethos!

      thabo.mkokeli - 2012-10-20 22:23

@Paul,if only all South Africans knew hw 2 use their votes.

      Chris Hitchinson - 2012-10-20 22:30

Come on Thuli - start a new party and run for President ! This decay has got to be stopped from the top down !

      arthur.hugh - 2012-10-20 23:31

Chris - I'm glad you said that. This lady is one of the few people so far who has stuck to her guns. So far she has been incorruptible and has exposed corruption. I tell you what, I would vote for this woman as president over Helen Zille any day. Not that Helen is corrupt or anything, but because Thuli can speak to the masses but she has huge amounts of integrity and she's stayed out of the fray - she's not said a bad word about anyone, she's just done her job. I F'ing love her for that.

      grant.montgomery.5074 - 2012-10-20 23:35

Chris, SA needs fewer opposititon parties, not another one If the smaller parties were to combine with the DA the country could go forward.

      gretchen.oswald.3 - 2012-10-20 23:54

Unfortunatley she is not a govt official..........what a pity! This may be the reason why she is doing such a great job. Lets just hope for women power soon- Adv Thuli for President of SA.

      gretchen.oswald.3 - 2012-10-21 00:08

@ Arthur- I agree that the DA is not as corrupt as ANC, but in order for them to get more votes HZ needs to step down soon and hand over to LM...... HZ has done a good job but its time to step down and hand over to a civilized and educated non white- its fact! Many more votes will come from opposition parties if Lindiwe took over...........and yes lets hope and pray that the likes of Thuli emerge. (unfortunately she is not a Govt official). Viva WOMAN power in SA.

      arthur.hugh - 2012-10-21 00:21

Gretchen - Lindiwe hasn't done much to stake her claim as someone who can be trusted - not by the masses nor by business. Helen has already made too many mistakes - as with the Hout Bay incident which was public, but not so public are places like Blikkiesdorp. If Lindiwe made some changes for the better then perhaps people would pay attention, but so far she's done very little. I am very involved with charity work - and so far, the DA has proved to be more of a hindrance than a help when it comes to getting things done.

      walter.o.latham - 2012-10-21 05:39

With all the publicity she has received it can only do this country a load of good. I wonder whether she wasn't initially a "political" appointee, but with an astute brain and who quickly saw the "light." She deserves a medal and long may she continue digging up and exposing the ANC's dirt.

      bless.boswell - 2012-10-21 08:56

      Thuli for President!!

      omo.naija.750 - 2012-10-21 10:44

I am not a fan of the DA but i am a fan of Helen Zille. The DA has been tainted as a "Pro white" party so it will be difficult for it to gain power except it can re branded in an effective way. Lindiwe Mazibuko is too "modese" to be seen as a black person by the masses.Even Helen Zille sounds more black than Mazibuko (Lol). The best option is if Helen Zille and Thuli Madonsela start a fresh party with a fresh strategy. They can probably adopt some of ANC's pro active policies to promote a "multi racial" image. Helen Zille is the iron "no nonsense" lady like Margaret Thatcher while Thuli is the quiet but disciplined cadre like Thomas Sankara. The combination of the two as President and Deputy President will mean well for SA.They also need to name the party in a way that it will sound African e.g African Progressive Movement (APM)

      tasmee.hylkema - 2012-10-21 13:54

@Omonaija, agree! That would be a potent combination of brains and integrity!

  • gift.moyo.52 - 2012-10-20 22:21

The only person who can deliver quality to your life is YOURSELF! Communities need to get control over their council budgets through electing responsible leaders who facilitate skills transfer by getting the local community to be hands-on in roads, sewage, housing projects etc. in their neighbourhood. If you build it, don't complain if it falls apart. The burning of the existing crumbling infrastructure just takes you further back. Only the aged, young children and disabled people should be dependant on Gvt.

      vera.platt - 2012-10-20 22:28

      Extremely well said Gift!

      arthur.hugh - 2012-10-20 23:33

Well said sir! I truly hope you are one of those leaders, if not, some day you will be. Thuli should be your inspiration!

      gretchen.oswald.3 - 2012-10-21 00:12

Viva Adv Thuli! You inspire us.

      Deon de Lange - 2012-10-21 00:13

Bua, morena, bua! Could not have said it better myself. Now if we could just find trustworthy candidates to elect... Politicians have unfortunately given politics - and more to the point, public service - such a bad rep that young, bright SAfricans don't get involved. Come on rainbow generation, it's your turn to roll up your sleeves and start cleaning up the mess my generation (40 plus) made.

      mullerier - 2012-10-21 05:48

Thank you Gift, your name is beautifully appropriate. Indeed "communities\voters need to get control over council\government spending in a civilized and democratic way....by voting responsible leaders into office and holding them accountable!". Absolutely no good will come of throwing rocks and burning existing infrastructure!!!

  • Tyrone Grobbelaar - 2012-10-20 22:26

Trust is earned; not a given. It can be likened to a marriage, infidelity and abuse. The public has been cheated on repeatedly in various ways. Sad to say that the people have Battered Wife Syndrome; they just can't leave the abuser.

      arthur.hugh - 2012-10-20 23:34

      Well said and sadly true.

      mc.segal.5 - 2012-10-21 06:37

This Is why Thuli must run as public protector a little longer to cement that trust that Tyrone is referring to. Then SHe only must appoint her successor (Who She is hopefully training up)then move on to a non political appointment of more responsbility. I wish her well.

  • thabo.mkokeli - 2012-10-20 22:26

keep up the gud work en w'll fallow u.\salute\

  • vera.platt - 2012-10-20 22:26

Sad / pathetic thing is that these ppl have waited 15 to 20 years for the houses, yet still vote in a pathetic government! Serves you right, you got what you voted for. I bunch of power hungry, greedy bastards who have never actually known real poverty.

      salee.sithwell - 2012-10-20 23:19

They shouldn't have been waiting for houses to begin with.

      joe.smit.549 - 2012-10-21 04:40

Nkandla could house about a million!

  • Martha1234 - 2012-10-20 23:07

You Madame, are a truly great South African! Thank you for your amazing good work!

      arthur.hugh - 2012-10-20 23:37

I agree whole heartily. Thuli would have done a million times better service to the country than our fraud of a president currently. I hope she is never corrupted, she is the last bit of inspiration this country has left.

      william.letsong.5 - 2012-10-20 23:45

      She should run for president.

  • jeremy.forbes.1293 - 2012-10-20 23:37

I couldn't help getting a lump in my throat reading this, at last there is a politician who genuinely cares for the poor. We need to find ways to back this lady up, we need to send messages of support to every media outlet. The thieves will get more desperate as her popularity grows with the public and they will try to take her out in more ways than one. Folks watch Thuli's back on whatever way you can and send messages of support in all kinds of forms. Thuli's courage may be our only hope for a decent future. Thuli for President!

      Deon de Lange - 2012-10-21 00:06

Bravo indeed, but please don't call her a politician. She is the impartial head of a Chapter 9 Institution, not a politician. She does not promote any political party - and dragging her into party politics only makes her job more difficult.

      mullerier - 2012-10-21 05:53

Jeremy, you voiced the fear gnawing away at me as I was reading the above article and comments. How can the masters allow her to become popular.....the ANC knows better than anyone the danger of that!!!

      Anthony - 2012-10-21 10:00

I agree 100% ....I have said so before here in an article about this wonderful lady ... Please people reading this article who work for the big multinational like Anglo ,goldfields etc etc put pressure on your bosses to send this wonderful lady some additional people ...imagine if all the big companies send just one bright smart person to work with her ...wow then we could really make a difference...I'm tired of hearing how great these companies are ,so push to send some people to her ...come on Salam ,old mutual etc (perhaps these big companies want to stay in the good books of the ANC ---sad)

  • patricia.dewet.92 - 2012-10-20 23:48

What a women. She is the only one that you can believe, the ministers are all dancing to Zuma's tune. It is scary. Just leave her alone, take on old Angie.

  • Fox Trixter - 2012-10-20 23:55

Thuli should become a true leader of the DA!

      mullerier - 2012-10-21 05:59

Now, there is a brilliant idea!!! With the damage done by Malema and the good by Madonsela.......we may actually have an opposition party, in a position to hold the majority party accountable!!!!

  • archie.mooki - 2012-10-21 00:02

it will take a real man to fit into your shoes!!!!!

  • louwc - 2012-10-21 01:27

Too little of her and too many of them...A lady I really respect!

      joe.smit.549 - 2012-10-21 04:35

      Indeed!

      mullerier - 2012-10-21 06:05

But if the good lady and the likes of her (and surely there must be more in this land of ours!)....join a party capable of being a strong opposition....I can see a light at the end of the tunnel. Instead of wasting our energies trying to replace figureheads within the ANC (their own members always call for their heads in any event), we should simply support a "good opposition" mentality. Nothing like healthy competition to focus the mind of a politician (both sides of the isle).

can u pls start by treating the Zuma, Nkandla meter. I asure you ppl tht Zuma is busy preparing himself for otocracy. pls do not put this guy in power again. he'll turn South Africa in to the poorest african country there is.

  • Chris Hitchinson - 2012-10-21 01:43

The people mentioned below have shown that they know more about what is needed to get SA out of this rut than all the politicians put together. New Party new hope

  • Earl O Tool - 2012-10-21 01:53

Dear Thuli Madonsela, please join the DA. u r doing true work :)

      Samuel - 2012-10-21 04:49

Its not about affiliation to political party, its about serving people irrespective of their political affiliation.

      parys.fotograaf - 2012-10-21 08:20

She will be stupid to do this. If she aims for a government position, she will get into ANC structures as even she should be able to count and see the ANC numbers. Does she on moral ground belong in the DA, Cope etc: Yes, but practically it makes no sense for her.

  • joe.smit.549 - 2012-10-21 04:28

We truly do, Thuli, we truly do!

  • Samuel - 2012-10-21 04:46

You truly r really leader Advocate Thuli. Wish I was living in a country where it comes to presidential candidates, quality is number one prerequisite. You would have made one on d list.

  • Rashida Patel - 2012-10-21 05:57

We do. Advocate Thuli, truly a great south african. If only we had more of her calibre

  • louiseroger.higham - 2012-10-21 06:36

This lady should be President but then again I guess she's far too educated and well spoken.

  • Xolani Made - 2012-10-21 06:59

Mara,,,,, why must we put race issues all over the Adv Thuli ' is only doing her Job an She doing great so far!!

  • mojalefa.malepa - 2012-10-21 07:48

I live in Diepsloot, this ministers and whoevers come here to shoot words and then disappear. Just like Tokyo Sexwale who spent a night in Dieploot (so they say) then Disappeared, that was i think 4/5 years ago. Not a sinlge house was build. Stop coming here to fool poor people, Ministers. Stupid government.

      Peabo Siphelele Mkhize - 2012-10-21 08:27

Shows that some people dont read the article before they comment here & some seem to not read at all, ever! Firstly, Thuli is not a minister. Secondly, after she interacted with the community at Diepslot the complaints on service delivery increased according to the article, so that means it was a successful day for the Protector as there will be less violent service delivery protests. Thirdly, claiming that the Public Protector's office is a toothless dog is a really exposing ur ignorance, so please spare us the pain on our eyes of reading nonsense, asseblief toe.

  • lara.vanrooyen.1 - 2012-10-21 07:54

If we could vote for the President instead of a party, she could have run as an independent candidate. And I suspect she would've gotten a lot of votes.

  • mrtinyiko.matsambu - 2012-10-21 08:04

Reality is, you act more like DA Shadow Minister of Justice, than public protector. Lawrence and Selby, were truly neutral, but as for you madam, i'm afraid, history will judge you otherwise. By the way, when is your term coming to end?

      michael.malegabata - 2012-10-21 08:44

u just think like ur corrupt friends when the majority of our ppl dont get desent service delivery

      tony.naidoo - 2012-10-21 09:06

Mr tiny. The public protector is a govt. appointee. She is not an affiliate of ANY political party! The fact that the anc is on the receiving end of her findings should enlighten you to the continuing, corrupt and ever failing PRESENT leadership of the once mighty, VOICE OF THE PEOPLE, anc! The leadership needs to be purged. People are crying for a fair deal from the govt. You are not one of the fatcats, are you? Do you have a mansion? Are your kids in posh prvate schools. Do you fly first class? Do you have a blue light limo? But, then again...suffering is your pasttime!

      mrtinyiko.matsambu - 2012-10-21 13:24

Tony, don't take it personal. You sound very political immature to understand how Government and Chapter 9 Institutions relate. Don't ever tjatjarag on the public platform, you'll expose your self.

      tasmee.hylkema - 2012-10-21 14:16

mr tiny, your voice is a tiny one on this platform. We the general public, who support the economy, the ones with the financial power, support Adv Madonsela. She is one of the only names in government SAfrican's unanimously support and admire. The fact of the matter is that the ANC and its supporter base is going down, something we have all seen coming for a long time. Is the truth to much to bear now that it is coming to pass? History will judge your moron president harshly, in the same league as Hitler, Ghaddaffi and Amin!

  • parys.fotograaf - 2012-10-21 08:17

Trust her office is one thing. The problem is that she is toothless as she cannot make and follow cases through herself.

  • khathu.rasi - 2012-10-21 08:24

The job she is doing is supposed to be done by the President

  • tony.naidoo - 2012-10-21 08:24

Viva, Thuli, viva. A lone warrior of truth, honesty and integrity! It is truly a shame to note the multitude of non-whites who fail to acknowledge your conscientiousness and common decency! And gene therapy is friggin expensive.

  • jaydee - 2012-10-21 09:35

Once again a lady (woman) have to show the ANC-leadership and underlings what integrity really is! I am not surprised that there are those who try to undermine her by claiming that she is bias! Thuli, bring those to justice who are misusing their power and the South African public's money!!!!Remember, Eve took the apple, because she want to acquire knowledge, but Adam took a bite because SHE TOLD HIM TO DO SO!!!!!!!

  • john.cryink - 2012-10-21 10:04

Ms Madonsela I take my hat off to you. Madam you are good. Carry on the good work. You will be worthy of being the president of South Africa

  • Rebecca - 2012-10-21 10:09

Doing a sterling job, keep up the good work. Viva Madonsela !

  • rasthami.m1 - 2012-10-21 10:30

  • yvonne.c.martin.71 - 2012-10-21 13:28

    Viva Women!! Job well done!!!!

  • Michael - 2012-10-21 13:54

In this country we have learned not to trust anyone, the other president once told us to trust him about Jackie Selebi, and we all know what happened later. So Thuli, just do your work, trusting your office is something else.

  • alwyn.vantonder - 2012-10-21 20:03

Well, looks like 9 000 people won't get their RDP houses, since the corrupt president and his overweight family decided to steal R250 million from the taxpayers..
