Pretoria - The Tshwane metro is seeking leave to appeal a court order instructing it to restore the city's old street names, it was reported on Friday.

It filed papers in the North Gauteng High Court applying for leave to appeal the order granted by Judge Bill Prinsloo in April, the Pretoria News reported.

Prinsloo ordered the Tshwane metro to stop removing old street names pending the finalisation of an adjudication process. He also ordered the municipality to put back the old street names it had removed.

Lobby group AfriForum brought the application for the court interdict.

According to the newspaper, the council was arguing that the judge erred in finding that, unless the interdict was granted, the old names would fall into disuse and the outcome of the review process would only be an academic process.

The Pretoria News reported that the council was asking for the application to be decide on an urgent basis, but that a date had not yet been set.
