Tshwane mayor defends 7 'protectors'

2012-02-05 21:15

Pretoria - Tshwane mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa has hit back at reports that he has seven bodyguards.

He says that his security team is made up of seven “protectors” who work different shifts and that one person is dedicated to scheduling these shifts.

City Press reported last week that Ramokgopa had seven bodyguards, a figure listed in the City of Tshwane’s annual financial statements.

The existence of seven guards, or “protectors”, was also confirmed by an official in the municipality.

But Ramokgopa said he had two bodyguards by his side at all times, two “protectors” at his home during the day and two at night.

The seventh person, he said, was responsible for scheduling and planning whether extra security was needed when visiting a volatile area.

He insisted that the same arrangement applied to all other metropolitan municipalities in the country.

Tax payer has to foot the bill for 8 people to do one mans work - this is just ridiculous!

      AyGeewils - 2012-02-05 21:30

By Comparison - Winston Churchill during WW2 had ONE!!

Reminds me of his mother, the previous Mayor !

  • maseratifittipaldi - 2012-02-05 21:33

Since when does a Mayor need protection against his own people? Since they started stealing the people's money?

      Billy - 2012-02-05 23:31

He only got the job because of his "deployed cadre" aunt, Gwen Ramokgopa, giving it to him. Nothing nicer than to see ANC democracy at work.

      mmakgaboe - 2012-02-06 07:51

I couldn't have said it better... why on earth would you need to be protected against your own people??

  • Cracker - 2012-02-05 21:38

The moment you get elected or appointed you appoint your personal bodyguards. Somehow it seems like a disconnection with reality.

      Sharon - 2012-02-05 22:08

He sounds like a mafia don

  • Sanet Oelofse - 2012-02-05 22:02

Why are they not relying on our efficient SAPS for protection, like the rest of South Africa, it is good for everyone else afterall...

  • mashavha - 2012-02-05 22:03

Do u really need a body guard mr mayor?what are u scared of?just a thought

  • Pawel - 2012-02-05 22:06

    Africa is dangerous ...

      Godfrey - 2012-02-06 04:15

Yeah, and how many mayors have been murdered? These bodyguards, the big black cars with tinted windows, the designer shades - they have been watching too many american gangster movies and want to emulate them.

      Bibi - 2012-02-06 07:54

Very dangerous... He can fire the 7th guy and give the scheduling to his PA's PA.

  • Wandile Mkhize - 2012-02-05 22:16

Am sur this ninja has a PA too, so what's up with an extra bodygueard to arrange, problably, one is a cousin or something

  • geoffjleach - 2012-02-05 22:21

    Self importance..............

  • Jason - 2012-02-05 22:23

    Did pre-1994 mayors have bodyguards?

  • Eish - 2012-02-05 22:34

Mr. Major 7 is 7 why you are justifying 7 and reduce it to 2. You’re in local government of the people by the people. What kind of message are you sending?

      KyleAssassin - 2012-02-06 06:21

A message that we can do what we like because we ARE the government, and we like to waste money! And there is nothing we can do to stop this.

  • Blip - 2012-02-06 01:49

Why's he so frightened? Who is he afraid of?

  • braamc - 2012-02-06 02:31

    It thinks it's god

      Bruce - 2012-02-06 10:27

I wasn't aware that God had bodyguards!

  • michael.liebenberg - 2012-02-06 04:10

Has a proper threat assesment been done by the NIA, SASS and SAPS?? For every VIP protocol has to be followed in determining the level of protection needed. I think in this case they need to call the zoo keeper.......

      AyGeewils - 2012-02-06 06:08

Chances are they all do! Just demonstrates the mindset of leadership now in SA - they are expecting a revolt at any time - because they know their own people and the level of corruption within their own municipalities.

  • William - 2012-02-06 06:07

So he has 7 bodyguards since for his protection. Isn't the crime rate in Tswane his responsibility?? Just another example of the Elite being set apart from the regular citizen. If all other South Africans have to live in fear, then why don't they??

  • pws69 - 2012-02-06 06:27

I travel from Sandton to Braamfontein to work every day. I've seen over a dozen 9 plus care blue light convoys in the last two months alone. Each car has a minimum of two people in it. 18 to 24 people just to get some ANC scum to a meeting on time, endangering the lives of other motorists all along the route. This protection for the most loved liberation in the universe. Mmmm.

  • maseratifittipaldi - 2012-02-06 06:33

ANC cadres have bodyguards protecting them against the public. The public has the Public Protector protecting them against ANC cadres. South Africans should not need protection against each other. They should all stand on the same side and perform in the direction of progress. One can only blame leadership for the current aberration. The ANC fills South Africa with s much negative emotion. They are toxic to South Africa and should be neutralized, for this country to move forward in any meaningful way.

  • jim.dickson2 - 2012-02-06 06:58

What about a rottweiler and an alarm system to protect him at home? The same as the rest of us! If he is the democratically (he he) elected representative of the people of Tshwane - Pretoria and surrounding areas, the people must love him. Why the need for bodyguards?

  • Graeme - 2012-02-06 07:05

he just wants more than Juli Ass, he more impotent than Juli Ass

  • Mahlatse Mabena - 2012-02-06 07:44

Two guards with him at all times. Not seven. That makes sense. Best major for our City and has papers to prove that.

      Bibi - 2012-02-06 07:53

On ADT/Chubb security guard at his gate at all times will do the trick. He must know something bad about the City that you Mhalatse do not know. Does he think he is Obama?

  • Gregory Jurgens - 2012-02-06 07:46

Must be a lot of people wanting to kick ur fat ass.

  • Bibi - 2012-02-06 07:46

NOT Helen Zille - she fetches her own mother (by herself) from the airport.

      Tshepo - 2012-02-06 09:45

      Because thats her mother

  • Bibi - 2012-02-06 07:48

Unfortunately, the poor and jobless do not read this and neither does Mr Mayor himself.

  • Tshepo - 2012-02-06 09:48

I stay in the same estate with the Meyor. I have noticed the Metro Guards...Honestly these guys are working shift... Constructive criticism will do...with knowledge as well

      Scouter - 2012-02-06 10:19

Lucky you Tshepo - your own free in house security company. A great rub- off from being the Mayor's neighbour I suppose.

      Bibi - 2012-02-06 13:55

You better put some number plates on your car what with the demerit system and all. And since you live with the mayor you need to be a good citizen. or is that your protector's car.
