Johannesburg - A University of Pretoria (Tuks) professor is in a critical, but stable condition in hospital after being shot by intruders in his Elarduspark home, Beeld reported on Tuesday.

Tuks science, maths and technology education department head Professor Max Braun was shot in the stomach on Saturday, and had to have 12 blood transfusions.

"They initially thought he wasn't going to make it, but it sounds like he's making progress," said his wife Clare Braun, who was shot in the left shoulder, and was also in hospital.

She and her husband were woken by a noise early on Saturday, and walked into the dark passage to investigate.

"I assumed that someone was breaking into the house, because over the past 30 years, we've had 10 burglaries... it was very dark, but I think there were three robbers. The one grabbed my arm, and I resisted. After that they just opened fire."

Captain Pinky Sinyane said no arrests had been made.
