Tutu, Madonsela Newsmakers of the Year

2011-12-05 21:17

Johannesburg - Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu and Public Protector Thuli Madonsela have been chosen as the Johannesburg Press Club's 2011 Newsmakers of the Year.

"Both the archbishop and the public protector have displayed extraordinary courage, commitment and consistency in fulfilling their respective duties to the people of South Africa," press club chairperson Mixael de Kock said on Monday.

"In particular, they have been nominated for the excellent manner in which they interacted with and made themselves accessible to the media."

De Kock said the archbishop had earned the award for having been the most quoted social commentator and social critic.

Madonsela was being honoured for her "unfailing, direct and courageous stance against immoral activities".

De Kock praised her for her work ethic and her veracity and devotion to leading the public protector's office.

"She is particularly being lauded for her ongoing maintenance of cordial and positive working relationship with the media."

Well yes they were newsmakers but Juliaas won hands down by my count. Might have been for all the wrong reasons but he has absolutely OWNED his space this year. Anyhow, well done to the winners... given the criteria it was well deserved.

I'm not Juju's biggest fan but he gets my vote!

You can't be serious Michael? Would you really like to see Julias being presented with this award? It would be just plain wrong. He made news for hate speech, sowing racial devide etc. WTF?

Thank you, Desmond Tutu and Thuli Madonsela for your courage to challange the system regarding corruption.

As an archbishop he should spend more on preaching the word of God,I'm sure Tutu has forgotten many bible verses.

its easy to quote bible verses; its not so easy to be couragous and speak out about the wrongs in Society

      Vuyo - 2011-12-06 08:22

He has retired from the preaching side of things a long time ago Chimene.

A question of "NO AGENDA" and the adherence to "issue based" comment on the part of the Arch, and the addressing of a task with commitment, vigour, skill, unimpeachable integrity and a heart as big as,if not bigger than any on the continent. Well deserved. They give credibility and hope to a country that is sorely lacking in that respect.

They definitely were not newsmakers of the year even here on news24 I think their combined number of article do not make half of those about Malema. So rather change the category name to something else like Freedom Advocate or smthng of that sort

      Gerald - 2011-12-06 10:05

i agree with you...the term newsmaker implies one who had the most articles written about them...one who made the most headlines, who made 'the most news. They must change the title of the award...
