Cape town - The gardener of Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu's daughter appeared briefly in the Cape Town Magistrate's Court on Wednesday in connection with her domestic worker's death.

Magistrate Mendy Tyulu ordered that Olwethu Mathise, 22, be kept in custody until his formal bail application on May 23.

Mathise applied for legal aid.

Dressed in a blue jacket and jeans, he kept his hands folded in front of him and his eyes cast down during proceedings.

He stands accused of strangling Angela Mscinga, 35. Her body was found on the bedroom floor of Mpho Tutu's home in Milnerton on April 12.

Her cellphone had been taken.
