Johannesburg -Twin eight-year-old girls drowned at the Mullerstuin small holding just outside Vanderbijl Park, Gauteng police said on Friday.
The girls apparently decided to go swimming on Thursday afternoon in holes dug for sand to fill potholes. Due to heavy rain the holes had filled with water, spokesperson Kinnie Steyn said.
A man who was attending to sheep and cattle nearby saw what was happening but was unable to swim so he ran to call the owner of the small holding.
The owner and his wife managed to pull the girls out of the hole and administered CPR, but they got there too late, she said.
Stein said the father of Lebo and Lebogang Mthinkulu told police that the girls had been very close and did everything together.
