Johannesburg - Two taxi drivers have been wounded in a drive-by shooting at Melville, near Kwadukuza, the KwaZulu-Natal transport department said on Monday.

"It is believed the occupants of an unknown vehicle opened fire as it passed the two drivers," department spokesperson Kwanele Ncalane said of the attack which took place at about 20:00 on Sunday.

He said the wounded men were taken to hospital where their conditions were stable.

"The department held a meeting with taxi operators on Sunday in an attempt to resolve their issues relating to permits in the area," he said.

"We are optimistic that the issues will be resolved. Operations were suspended on Friday as taxi operators accused the department of stalling in issuing taxi operating licences."

This will only escalate now that the political influences has shut down the Cato Manor SVCU... Expect more taxi violence, more taxi boss assassinations, more commuters caught in the cross fires, etc.. We already had two cash-in-transit robberies yesterday in areas that had been cleaned up by this unit...
