Johannesburg - The bodies of two men were found lying in the bushes next to the R59 bridge along the Vaal River on Friday, Vereeniging police said.

Spokesperson sergeant Xolile Majola said a fisherman found the bodies of two African men believed to be in their 20s.

"[The] bodies were badly assaulted and had head wounds that seem to be caused by firearms..." he said in a statement.

"Preliminary investigations indicated that the deceased might have been with girls who might have been victims of rape... The police are urging [people] who might have knowledge about the cruel criminal act to contact [us]."

Majola said no arrests have been made and investigations continue.

One man was wearing black trousers with a purple shirt and the other man was wearing a white shirt and grey trousers.
