Johannesburg - A woman and a child died when a bus collided with a car near Henley Dam in Pietermaritzburg, paramedics said on Saturday.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said the head-on collision happened about 18:30 on Saturday and the cause of the accident was unknown.

When paramedics arrived on the scene they found the wreckage of the bus on its side.

The crumpled remains of the car were found on the roadway with the occupants still trapped in the vehicle, Botha said.

"After triaging the injured it was found that the child had tragically died before our arrival, the mother and father were in a critical condition while a bus passenger escaped with minor injuries," said Botha.

Paramedics started resuscitating the woman after she went into cardiac arrest, tragically though she died on scene due to the extensive injuries that she sustained, he said.

The critically injured male and the bus passenger were stabilised on scene before being transported to Edendale hospital.

Police were investigating the cause of the accident.
