Durban - Two people have died in separate crashes in Kwazulu-Natal early on Sunday morning, officials said.

In the first incident at around 02:00, an SUV and a bakkie collided on the R61 highway between Ramsgate and Southbroom, KZN Emergency Medical Services spokesperson Robert McKenzie said in a statement.

One person died at the scene of the crash and three others were injured. The jaws of life had to be used to rescue two of them. They were taken to hospital for further treatment.

In the second incident at around 06:30, a taxi and car collided on the R102 in Shakaskraal, said Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha.

The taxi driver was ejected from the crumpled remains of his vehicle. He was extensively injured and died at the scene of the crash.

A passenger in the taxi was seriously injured and another person escaped with minor injuries, Botha said.

Police are investigating both crashes.
