Johannesburg - Two men who allegedly tried to defraud
people out of their money were arrested by the Hawks in a shopping complex in
Nelspruit, police said on Thursday.
Police spokesperson Paul Ramaloko said the pair posed as
bank officials on Wednesday and stood at an ATM in the Matsulu shopping
complex. They apparently offered help to those who had come to withdraw money.
"Allegations are that they requested the bank card
of one person in the queue. One of [the arrested men] allegedly swiped the
person's card on a card skimming device," said Ramaloko.
"People in the queue became suspicious and a mob
justice [struggle] ensued."
Police arrived at the scene and rescued the men from the
angry crowd. They were arrested and the device was confiscated from them.
The device copies information illegally from the magnetic
strips on the back of bank cards. It can either be hand-held or placed into an
ATM machine.
The two would appear in the Kabokweni Magistrate's Court
on Friday, where they would face charges of the possession of a card skimming
device and fraud.
