Two held in bogus kidnapping case
Johannesburg - Two people were arrested for allegedly faking a kidnapping in Danielskuil, Northern Cape police said on Thursday.
At midday on Wednesday, a 15-year-old girl contacted her father and told him that she had been kidnapped by a gang demanding R3 500 for her release, said Captain Tony Modise.
"Captain John Stapleton... arranged telephonically to meet with the kidnapper to hand over the money at a local shop," he said.
At the shop, a number of police officers kept out of sight while another met the man to hand over the money as agreed.
The man and the girl were arrested, and were to appear in the Postmasburg Magistrate's Court on Monday.
Modise said that reporting of false crimes equated to defeating the ends of justice.
