Johannesburg - Two men have been arrested after they allegedly hijacked a delivery vehicle at gunpoint in Benoni, Ekurhuleni metro police said on Thursday.

They were cornered shortly after they abandoned the hijacked vehicle near a petrol station on Wednesday afternoon, Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago said.

"A metro police officer who witnessed the hijacking at the New Modder Road filling station gave chase and called for backup."

A unit on patrol came to his assistance. An unlicensed firearm with its serial number filed off and a computer were among the recovered items.

"The victim was able to link the men to the crime," he said.

The men, aged 23 and 32, were taken to the Benoni police station and charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, and car-jacking.

They were expected to appear in the Benoni Magistrate's Court on Friday.
