Two huge lotto prizes for 2010
Johannesburg - The National Lottery will kick off 2010 with almost R50m in two massive jackpots up for grabs on January 1 and 2, the lottery operator, Gidani said on Thursday.
"The New Year's Day PowerBall draw is an estimated R25m jackpot on Friday, while the lotto jackpot for the draw on Saturday is estimated at R24m," said spokesperson Thembi Tulwana in a statement.
Tulwana said the two gigantic jackpots gave an exciting start to 2010.
"Players are urged to purchase their Lotto and PowerBall tickets early to avoid last-minute queues which form at retailers whenever there are big jackpots," she said.
Making his debut on the national lottery stage on New Year's Day would be the new chairperson of the National Lotteries Board, Professor Ntshengedzeni Alfred Nevhutanda.
He would be the draw guest and push the button for both the PowerBall and lotto draws.
"Nevhutanda comes from a well-established and respected background spanning academia, business and politics as well as vast experience in strategy formulation and direction, and exceptional management skills," said Tulwana.
Nevhutanda had served on the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund's distributing agency for arts, culture and national heritage, which had already delivered on its mandate in ensuring that almost R7bn was paid to NGO's across South Africa, Tulwana said.
