Johannesburg - Two men died in separate accidents in the Springs area on Wednesday morning, paramedics said.

The first accident occurred around 01:30 on Hewitt Avenue in Selection Park in Springs, said Netcare911 spokesperson Santi Steinmann.

Emergency personnel arrived at the scene and found that a heavy goods vehicle and light delivery vehicle were involved in the accident.

"Upon assessment of all the occupants, paramedics found that a 28-year-old man was in a critical condition entrapped in the light delivery vehicle," she said.

"The fire department made use of the Jaws of Life to extricate the man from his vehicle. His condition deteriorated rapidly and tragically the man died as a result of the extensive injuries sustained during the crash.

"There was nothing further that paramedics could do for the man and he was sadly declared dead at the scene."

The driver of the heavy goods vehicle sustained moderate injuries during the accident, the cause of which was unknown.

Police were investigating.

Pedestrian

The second accident saw a man, believed to be a pedestrian, killed on the N17 in Casseldale, Springs, around 03:00.

"Netcare 911 paramedics and other services arrived at the scene and found the lifeless body of the man lying on the roadway," Steinmann said.

"Upon assessment paramedics found that the man had died prior to their arrival due to the extensive injuries sustained after he was knocked over by a vehicle. The man was declared dead at the scene."

The cause of the accident and events leading to it would be investigated by police.
