Two killed on way to church

Johannesburg - Two people were killed and 20 others were injured on Sunday morning when a bakkie overturned in Somerset West, Western Cape paramedics said.

They were travelling to church in a Hyundai bakkie that overturned on the N2 highway near Sir Lowrys pass, ER24 spokesperson Andre Visser said.

The two died on the scene.

A two-year-old child and a man were airlifted to hospital. The other injured people were taken to various hospitals around the area.

      I Agree. Overloading does not only happen in taxi's. Common sense must prevail. Sadly it did not today.

    How can 20 people be allowed to be transported in a bakkie? Where were the traffic police? Very sad!

    So the speed cameras could net identify and stop the overloaded bakkie? What will the authorities' solution be? More cameras and more concentration on speed off course!!

    Where were the traffic cops? These people were obviously not wearing seat belts. Why are people allowed to travel on the backs of bakkies anyway?

    The info given yesterday was 30+ people in the bakkie, including 7 children, with 2 killed. The bakkie apparently overturned as it was overloaded, so either way the driver should be bought to book. Unfortunately there is not enough education in the poorer communities about the dangers of overcrowding a vehicle or getting into an unroadworthy vehicle.
