Pietermaritzburg - Two people were killed and thirteen others injured in a road accident in Pietermaritzburg on Thursday evening, paramedics said.

The accident happened on Camberg Road, said ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring.

"Paramedics from the Pietermaritzburg branch arrived on scene and found a bakkie lying on its side in the middle of the road. Occupants of the bakkie lay all across the scene."

A woman had sustained fatal injuries in the crash. Another woman lay near the vehicle with no signs of life, said Meiring.

Paramedics performed advanced life support and CPR for an hour.

"Unfortunately no signs of life returned and the patient was declared dead."

Thirteen other patients sustained injuries ranging from minor to moderate.

Paramedics treated the patients and thereafter transported them to Northdale Hospital.

"The cause of the collision is not yet known but local authorities were on scene for further investigations," Meiring said.
