Tycoon not at home during raid

2011-06-02 10:10

Durban - Flashy multi-millionaire couple Sibusiso Mpisane and Shaun Mkhize were not at home to entertain some unwelcome guests in their typical lavish fashion on Wednesday, when members of the SA Revenue Service (Sars) and the Hawks swooped on their La Lucia house and business in an elaborate raid.

Authorities were tight-lipped about details of the raid as a large media contingent gathered outside the R15m mansion in Addison Drive, La Lucia, and passers-by slowed down to observe.

Although the whereabouts of the couple are unconfirmed, sources close to them say the two are holidaying on the party island of Ibiza in Spain.

The former Durban metro police officer and his wife are best known for their fleet of expensive cars - including a Rolls Royce Phantom and Lamborghinis - and the lavish parties that celebrities and politicians flocked to.

Tax-related investigation

Sars spokesperson Adrian Lackay said authorities had a search-and-seizure warrant and the raid was part of an ongoing tax-related investigation.

This being the first day of the raid, it is understood that authorities were scanning computers in the house for irregularities, as well as making an inventory of the couple’s assets for possible seizure.

In March last year Sars seized three vehicles worth nearly R17m belonging to the couple to cover unpaid taxes.

Sars took possession their Rolls Royce Phantom convertible - valued at about R7m - and two Lamborghinis valued at about R4.5m and R5m.

The Mpisanes threw a lavish party on New Year’s Eve, which was attended by National Police Commissioner General Bheki Cele and several celebrities.

Low income houses

The couple voluntarily handed over some of their moveable assets last year as surety and pledged to pay Sars over a few months.

In 2009 it was reported that the couple had received R219m from the eThekwini Municipality to build low-income houses on 4?500 sites in Umlazi.

The National Home Builders’ Registration Council found defects in more than 1?000 of the 3?000 houses built by Zikhulise Cleaning and Transport, owned by the Mpisanes.

Of the defects, 30% were serious and would require major renovations.

Hawks spokesperson McIntosh Polela, declined to comment, saying the raid was the domain of Sars and that the Hawks merely assisted.

Partying with ill-gotten proceeds. Stolen money doesnt get you far!!!

      GinSA1 - 2011-06-02 10:29

Then why is Zuma where he is?

      saabnut - 2011-06-02 10:37

Guys and girls: I think we are missing the point. These proceeds are not ill- gotten. The ancestors gave them the booty- it's not their fault!

In africa it does , look at the anc cadres , NOT their voters tho !

      Audacious - 2011-06-02 11:30

Why does it always have to take so long before some one notices a cop with a flasshy lifestyle? I would have thought it was underworld activities had I spotted this. Surely collegues must notice and investigate? Or maybe thats the way it was discovered, but the SAPS took too long

      Creeky - 2011-06-02 11:36

Don't you guys find it rather STRANGE, that whenever CRIMINALS in SA get arrested, TOP GOVT OFFICIALS NAMES ARE MENTIONED FOR PARTYING / MIXING WITH THEM???? In this case Bheki Cele! The Mpisane's attended CELE'S Wedding down the South Coast recently... Mpisane was a TRAFFIC COP, when he had his R15m MANSION built in Umhlanga... Now tell me the ANC is NOT RIFE WITH CORRUPTION.... ROTTEN TO THE CORE!!!!

      Audacious - 2011-06-02 11:36

We, all us taxpayers are pathetic. Here I include myself. We should do what they do in Europe when even the price of bread is too high for them. Enough of the poor rhetoric. The taxpayers should protest. How is is poosible that the poor, who we support can burn down what taxpayers provide to them for free, yet we dont?

      ntombzam - 2011-06-02 11:46

@GinSA1 The whereabouts of Zuma have no connection to story! Please read!

      1stcase - 2011-06-02 12:10

I have read all the post on this forum and I have notice something. When these guys" black guys" misuse public funds they get called a lot of things. But what I don’t see is the fact that most of these white up standing citizens don’t do, is to criticise the white people who sell these fleshy cars, clothes and houses to these corrupt people. So does white capitalist also have the blood of the poor on their hands or is it a case of being a good business man. It’s amazing that probably most of the self-righteous guys on this forum probably works for companies that have or is profiting from these so called corrupt cronies.

      Edgar Boehm - 2011-06-02 13:06

@ntombzam, You are not following GinSA1's comment. I actually cant be bothered to explain the rhetoric to you but what Gin said makes sense..

      willieman - 2011-06-02 10:39

100% All anc follows wake this horrible things are been done on your name.Majority vote is been abused

  • Plonker69 - 2011-06-02 10:24

In Ibiza with our tax money. And the poor dont even have a roof over their head cause of these thugs.

      kasiboy55 - 2012-05-18 16:43

What makes you think it's your tax money? Sbu Mpisane is just fronting for his wife. His wife is a successful and respected business who allows her husband to lead the way and get adorned by the spotlight because that's what a good wife does. She let's her husband be the man of the household

  • saabnut - 2011-06-02 10:25

No doubt tipped off by a senior SAPS official. He is probably sucking up to Cele as we type- filth...

  • Charles - 2011-06-02 10:28

Lock them up. Just another (of the so many cases) example of how BEE works for you. This is a joke and who is paying? The minority while the majority keeps voting on bases of receiving a bread basket. This is pathetic.

I wonder who they bought these cars and houses from. Yes the minority. What the minority should be thankfull for is the fact that BEE is not working because these rich cronies should have bought these cars from black BEE dealers.

      tryanything - 2011-06-02 15:22

A good 'fleshy car' Is the one Robert Mugabe has> a nice custom mb.

  • BRONZE - 2011-06-02 10:40

If they weren't home then to whom were these warants served? How does this work exactly? Please help before I waste my millions running away to sudden holidays thinking my assets will be safe :)

      kalabafazi@24.com - 2011-06-02 14:37

@ Bronze - A high Court order, which is what they should have had, does not need to be served on anybody. If there is no-one at home or if they refuse you access you are allowed to kick down the door. Literally.

  • DW - 2011-06-02 10:43

I noticed this morning that they are still there. Do what you have to do whilst these people are away and cannot try to stop you (by getting friends of friends to arrange a court injunction). It is time that this scum is brought to book.

  • Boodaleh - 2011-06-02 12:13

This might be a dump question... "Zikhulise Cleaning and Transport" Has this anything to do with Home building?

      Piko A - 2011-06-02 13:03

Of course it does. They clean out the funds and transport it to a holday island. Or they transport it in their new Rolls Royce. Simple? Obvioulsy they dont do any building.

  • Peter - 2011-06-02 12:19

Just in case Hawks to let you know that " Bin Laden" has already been captured , just in case.

  • Cruesader - 2011-06-02 14:39

If the story about the poor standards of the RDP houses the Mpisane built is true, then according to the MFMA act , such contractor must be black listed on the National Treasury database of Tender defaultors list. Then on that bases they should not qualify for any Tender from any goverment sphere. The next question would that how are they going sustain their lavish lifestyle at the taxpayer's expense?. I recommend that our goverment must take action to try to resort its non-existant credability.
