UFS faces civil action over racial attack

Bloemfontein - The University of the Free State and two of its students face civil action following the alleged racial attack on a student, reports the Sunday Independent.

According to the report, Damane Muzi Gwebu, who is a fifth-year economics student, was allegedly run over by a bakkie and assaulted by students Cobus Muller and Charl Blom last month.

Muller and Blom already face criminal charges of attempted murder, assault and reckless and negligent driving. They will appear in court on 9 April.

However, Gwebu has said he has approached the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) for assistance as he wants to pursue a civil case against the university and possibly against Muller and Blom for unfair discrimination on the grounds they used the k-word against him.

UFS rector Jonathan Jansen said the university regards the matter in a very serious light, and was doing its own investigation, according to an earlier report.

This is not the first time the spotlight has fallen on the university. In 2010, four former students, known as the Reitz Four, were sentenced to 12 months in prison or a fine of R20 000 each after being found guilty of crimen injuria, reported Sapa at the time.

The charges related to their humiliation of five black workers in an initiation-type of ceremony they conducted and filmed while living at the University of the Free State's now-closed Reitz men's residence in 2007.
