Bloemfontein - If you visit the University of the Free State’s Faculty of Humanities, you will find some lecturers who are as excited as a kid on Christmas Eve about their new postgraduate course in film and visual media.

"We have already kicked the course off this year with a group of eight honours students,” Professor Nico Lewis told News24.

“What makes this course different, is the fact that we have a strong academical and theoretical base. I believe this makes our course unique.

"This is not merely about making media, it is about making quality media,” he said.

He said the new studio had not been completed yet, but that they were very excited about it.

“This is going to be state of the art, from A to Z. And that is exactly what you want as a student – who wants to learn on old stuff that isn’t used in the industry anymore? We believe the equipment and the studio is the best in the country.”

One of the advantages of this studio, is that students will be trained in multicam acting.

“Students often get involved in the industry lacking this particular skill, which makes it a big thing that we can train it here,” Lewis said.

One of the students, Rethabile Radebe, said she appreciated the approach of the lecturers and believed it was their constructive criticism, particularly, that had a huge impact.

“My confidence has improved a lot. They help you to perform in your studies, but I believe they have also helped me to become a better person.

"If you did something well, they don’t forget to give you credit for it.”
