Bloemfontein - Five students arrested on Wednesday during protests at the University of the Free State (UFS) have been released by police.
Captain Chaka Marope said the students were arrested, taken in for questioning and released.
"Statements were taken from them and would be submitted to State prosecutors to decide on possible prosecution."
Police used a stun grenade to disperse a group of students who were protesting about a racist video showing black workers being humiliated by white students.
The Bloemfontein campus of UFS was calm by Wednesday afternoon, with police maintaining a presence.
Meanwhile, Free State Premier Beatrice Marshoff said on Wednesday that racial acts at the University of Free State, which had so far gone unreported and unchallenged, would no longer be tolerated.
Marshoff said it was possible more such abuses might have taken place.
"Our approach (in discussions with the Human Rights Commission) will be that a full-scale investigation of racism (on campus) must be initiated as a matter of urgency."
