Durban - The University of KwaZulu Natal's Westville campus is expected to once again embark on strike action on Thursday.

Speaking to News24, SRC spokesperson Nash Khumalo confirmed the demonstration would take place.

“Yes, we will once again embark on strike action showing solidarity for the current student protests. We expect it to be peaceful with students simply demonstrating against fee hikes.”

Khumalo on Wednesday accused police of attempting to shoot at students, but said demonstrators were peaceful despite the threat.

In Cape Town, the protest turned violent as police fired stun grenades to disperse students when they forced their way into the Parliamentary precinct. Thirty students were arrested, including the sons of UCT vice chancellor Max Price and ANC stalwart Frank Chikane.

While politicians and civil rights groups have condemned the action taken by police against the protesters in Parliament on Wednesday, police say they were "satisfied" with how they conducted themselves.

Students were adamant that the protest action will continue until their demands were met.
