Johannesburg - The sex worker accused of stabbing US consulate worker Christopher Bates to death because he refused to pay her has been acquitted, The Star reported on Monday.

Lorraine Mogapi reportedly began to cry the moment she heard the not guilty verdict at the Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court on Friday.

The newspaper reported that Judge Leonie Windell said the State did not succeed in proving Mogapi's guilt.

In the judgment, Windell said Mogapi's story was the most likely sequence of events on that January 2013 night when Bates was found stabbed in the driveway of his Illovo, Johannesburg housing complex.

Bates had agreed to purchase Mogapi's services for R200 and had driven her to his home in Illovo Gardens.

An argument ensued when he allegedly refused to pay the agreed R200 and said she was not worth the price.

Bates was said to have fetched a knife from the kitchen and Mogapi pepper sprayed him. She reportedly grabbed the knife and Bates chased her with a baseball bat.

When he caught up, Mogapi stabbed him in the chest, which led to his death.
