Johannesburg - The University of the Western Cape (UWC) sent its condolences on Sunday to the family of Professor Russel Botman, the rector and vice-chancellor of Stellenbosch University, following Botman's death.

"The University of the Western Cape's alumni, staff and students express their condolences to the family, colleagues and friends of Professor Russel Botman," spokesperson Luthando Tyhalibongo said in a statement.

Stellenbosch University said on Saturday Botman died in his sleep at his home in Stellenbosch on Friday night.

Tyhalibongo said at UWC, Botman had studied and was awarded bachelors of arts, theology, and science, plus a Masters of Theology and a doctorate in theology.

Botman had also worked at the university as a dean and professor.

He said Botman made immeasurable contributions to higher education and was committed to transformation. Botman joined Stellenbosch University in 2000 as a professor in the department of practical theology and missiology.

In 2002 he was appointed Vice-Rector.

He was an internationally-known theologian who advised the World Alliance of Reformed Churches in Geneva on several topics.
