Two girls brutally killed in Joburg

2013-09-10 08:16

Johannesburg police are investigating the murder of two young girls, who went missing over the weekend. The children were killed in separate incidents and discovered on Monday. Watch.WATCH

Johannesburg - A relative of a 4-year-old girl who was murdered in Brakpan at the weekend is due in court on Monday after allegedly confessing to the crime, Gauteng police said.

The 23-year-old was expected to appear in the Brakpan Magistrate's Court on a charge of murder, spokesperson Captain Tsekiso Mofokeng said.

"A missing person's report was issued on Saturday morning and the police and the community started looking [for the girl]. We had to do our own investigation," said Mofokeng.

Police then interviewed the family.

"We identified that one of the family members did not give a confident story... He gave many versions."

Mofokeng said the man was charged with kidnapping. Later "he gave in and confessed" and helped the police find the body underneath a bed in her father's flat.

"We will hear from the post-mortem what caused the death and whether there was sexual assault," said Mofokeng.

The Star on Monday named the murdered girl as Jasmin Pretorius, and reported that her uncle - who apparently had a long history of drug abuse - had initially told police he sold the girl to Nigerian drug dealers for drugs. He then confessed to strangling her and hiding her body under the bed.
