Union tackles SABC over bonuses

2011-11-07 20:40

Johannesburg - A media union filed a dispute on Monday against the SABC over what it described as unpaid bonuses to middle management staff since 2008.

The dispute was filed with the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) as a last resort, Bemawu president Hannes du Buisson said in a statement.

He said this came after a number of meetings with and requests to SA Broadcasting Corporation senior executives turned out to be fruitless.

SABC spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago was not available to comment on the matter.

The Broadcasting, Electronic, Media and Allied Workers Union (Bemawu) said its members in middle management were unhappy. "[They have not] received any bonuses for the past three financial years and not having received the same salary increase during 2009 as other permanent SABC staff members at the time."

Du Buisson said these middle managers apparently got a five-percent increase compared to 11% for other SABC staff members.

"This at a time where top management has lined their own pockets and allegations are rife of jobs for pals," Du Buisson said.

"Bemawu is of the view [that] our members on middle management are entitled to the bonuses and the same salary increase as every other employee of the SABC."

Du Buisson said the dispute was a long standing issue.

The middle managers, who he described as the backbone of the SABC, had been waiting patiently and in good faith for feedback from the broadcaster.

He said car allowances for middle management were last reviewed in 2003 - despite senior and top management at the SABC having allegedly received an additional R10 000 per month as a petrol allowance on top of their monthly car allowance of between R10 000 and R14 000.

"Middle management does not get petrol allowance. This is a totally unacceptable and intolerable situation," he said.
