University students boycott over fees

2011-01-28 14:05
Pretoria - Students at the University of Limpopo's Medunsa campus near Pretoria were boycotting classes in protest against fee increases and a lack of accommodation for postgraduate students, the Pretoria News reported on Friday.

There were protests on campus on Thursday. The Student Representative Council (SRC) at the Medunsa campus in GaRankuwa, north-west of Pretoria, also called for a shutdown of the campus' sports complex next week.

First year students were expected to start registering there on Monday.

SRC president Tiisetso Ntsie was quoted as saying that the management had until Friday to respond to the SRC's demands, which also included that the university re-examine its decision to exclude a number of students.

A university spokesperson was quoted saying the university was aware of the demands.

She said the SRC had been aware of the fee increases set by the university's council, of which the SRC was a member.
