University students boycott over fees

2011-01-28 14:05

Pretoria - Students at the University of Limpopo's Medunsa campus near Pretoria were boycotting classes in protest against fee increases and a lack of accommodation for postgraduate students, the Pretoria News reported on Friday.

There were protests on campus on Thursday. The Student Representative Council (SRC) at the Medunsa campus in GaRankuwa, north-west of Pretoria, also called for a shutdown of the campus' sports complex next week.

First year students were expected to start registering there on Monday.

SRC president Tiisetso Ntsie was quoted as saying that the management had until Friday to respond to the SRC's demands, which also included that the university re-examine its decision to exclude a number of students.

A university spokesperson was quoted saying the university was aware of the demands.

She said the SRC had been aware of the fee increases set by the university's council, of which the SRC was a member.

You would expect more civilised students applying here, its not a BA or a Bcom university... maybe the selection of postential students should be re-evaluated to make sure that the right persons are studying here ?... but hten again Doctors were on strike recently - resulting in problems for many patients even possibly unnecessary deaths --- these guys studying medicine get real things cost money... and for this type of studies you would expect no hand outs --- go and study at Wits or Johannesburg...

The year has hardly started and these arrogant riff-raff are demanding and threatening already. One can understand now what the future holds for this country when the aspirant medical industry is in tatters before it has started the year.I would not want my children to associate with people like these. They make themselves inferior by their own deeds.
