Kimberley - A farmer from Upington in the Northern Cape was shot dead in the kitchen of his home on Sunday morning.
Superintendent Rita Crafford of the Northern Cape police said Johan de Jager, 55, who farmed at Uap, about 15km from Upington, apparently surprised an intruder when he returned home.
The intruder was apparently surprised in the kitchen, as De Jager was shot in the face as he was entering through the back door. He died instantly.
A neighbour who lives about 100m away heard a shot, but thought it was a door banging.
When the neighbour walked past the house about 15 minutes later he saw De Jager lying in the doorway and called the police.
Some cash and a few items of jewellery were missing from the house, said Crafford.
