Cape Town - About half of the valuable Asian ceramic pieces stolen from a Cape Town museum have been recovered, Western Cape police said on Thursday.

Nineteen ceramic items, from the 17th to 18th century, were found to be missing from an exhibit at the Manor House on the Groot Constantia wine farm, sometime before Monday morning. The items, said to be worth R50m, included a Chinese hot water urn, Japanese beaker vases, and Chinese plates and platters.

Warrant Officer November Filander said workers found 10 pieces on a nearby farm in Groot Constantia between Monday night and Wednesday.

No arrests had been made, but police were waiting for fingerprint results.

The museum exhibits furniture, paintings, textiles, ceramics, brass and copperware from the homes of successful Cape farmers. It was closed until further notice.

oh dear, next all our museums will be no more - no art, no artifacts ... nothing ... i suppose when people are hungry they don't care much about history and relics. is SA going downhill this fast?

the answer is a simple YES!

What are you still doing in South Africa? Your negative attitude does neither you nor your country any good. Smile and the world smiles back at you. Crime happens all over the world and is not a uniquely South African thing.

Mark, you are in denial. Have a cup of coffee and wake up!

Sorry, but not quite a sign of SA's decline -seeing that I recall something very similar happened like this, in the same place, a long time ago. That time the thieves broke through the roof -but but SAPF caught them. (Wasn't the theft then on commission by some oriental chap?)
